Another year ends without a championship
The Cubs wrapped up the disappointing 2005 season yesterday by losing to the Astros, 6-4. The Cubs finished the season with a record of 79-83 and in fourth place.
Ryan Dempster was awarded for his stellar season with a 3-year, $15.5 million extension. After starting the season in the starting rotation, Dempster has converted 33 of 35 save chances, leading the National League with a .943 saves percentage. The man he replaced as closer in May, former Cub LaTroy Hawkins, is tied for the NL lead with nine blown saves.
Carlos Zambrano finished with a .300 batting average, the highest of any Cubs pitcher with 75 or more at-bats since at least 1945.
