Jack Bauer facts

You can lead a horse to water. Jack Bauer can make him drink.

If you wake up in the morning, it's because Jack Bauer spared your life.

Upon hearing that he was played by Kiefer Sutherland, Jack Bauer killed Sutherland. Jack Bauer gets played by no man.

1.6 billion Chinese are angry with Jack Bauer. Sounds like a fair fight.

Superman wears Jack Bauer pajamas.

Jack Bauer played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

If Jack and MacGyver were locked in a room together, Jack would make a bomb out of MacGyver and get out.

When life gave Jack Bauer lemons, he used them to kill terrorists. Jack Bauer hates lemonade.

Jack Bauer can get McDonald's breakfast after 10:30.

Someone stop the madness

Borrowed without permission from the Purdue Exponent.

Purdue freshman guard Korey Spates has been released from the men's basketball team for conduct detrimental to the team.

This is the second time Spates has been reprimanded by the team. Spates was suspended in November for the same offense; that suspension lasted six days.

Coach Matt Painter said Spates' dismissal was the best decision for both parties.

"We felt that it would be in the best interests of Korey and our team to part company," Painter said in a statement. "I wish nothing but the best for him and his family."

Spates did not practice on Monday, and his release was not the result of one single action but rather a decision based upon a culmination of actions, according to Elliot Bloom, the associate sports information director.

Spates, who had been barred from talking to the media for most of the season, averaged 10.1 points in 15 games for Purdue.

The Boilers are now left with nine active players on their roster, following injuries and suspensions. After starting the season with 10 guards, Purdue is now left with five on its active roster.

Cubs add another injury prone pitcher

The Chicago Cubs added another arm on Monday, signing pitcher Wade Miller to a one-year contract for 2006.

Miller, 29, signed for $1 million with another $1 million possible in incentives based on the number of starts he makes. The right-hander spent much of the 2005 season on the disabled list because of problems with his shoulder but Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said they received good reports on Miller's health.

Boilers win first Big Ten game

This is the article from The Exponent because I don't feel like writing something witty.

The three players coming off the Purdue bench in Saturday's 72-55 win over Minnesota (9-5, 0-3 Big Ten) accounted for 35 points.

Junior Marcus White was one of those players, scoring a season-high 17 points in the Boilers' most decisive win of the season.

Following a 15 point output in Wednesday's loss to Ohio State, Saturday's performance showed that White is learning to let the game come to him and not force his play.

"I think just stop trying to rush it," he said. "I realize that if I calm down, the game will come a lot easier to me."

That is the message that coach Matt Painter had been trying to get through to White.

He thinks it might have sunk in.

"I thought Marcus White played within himself on both ends of the court," Painter said. "I think that it's very important for him just to let the game come to him, not force things."

Even though he did have two turnovers, White had in six rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and brought the crowd to its feet numerous times with slam dunks.

Senior forward Matt Kiefer said White not only brings excitement off the bench, but a dependable source of production.

"Marcus is doing a good job as far as brining energy and athleticism and doing things we need him to do," Kiefer said. "He's done that the last three or four games."

Over the past three games, White is averaging 13 points and more than five rebounds a game for the Boilers (7-8, 1-3).

However White wasn't the only player that Minnesota coach Dan Monson thought hurt his team on the inside.

"I think he played very aggressive," Monson said. "Their inside guys I thought were huge. They were more physical and more aggressive than we were."

And that's the kind of play Painter has been looking for out of White, a Connecticut transfer.

"He has the ability to be a high energy guy; a guy that can be all over the court, guard different people, block shots," Painter said. "There's no doubt he gives us another dimension."

Kirsch going pro?!

Brandon Kirsch decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft. I'm sure the NFL scouts were impressed when Kirsch was replaced by a freshman six games into the season. I think it is safe to assume that Kirsch will still be available on second day of the draft.

Carson Palmer's career could be over

The knee injury that Palmer sustained on Sunday against the Steelers could possibly be career-ending according to his surgeon. The injury included numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated kneecap. Palmer had surgery Tuesday in Houston. Doctors used grafts from other parts of his body and donated tissue to fix the damage during an operation that lasted more than two hours. Palmer headed back to California on Thursday to do his rehabilitation.

Corey Patterson was traded to the Baltimore Orioles today for minor leaguers Nate Spears (IF) and Carlos Perez (LHP).

Patterson hit .252 with 70 homers in parts of six major league seasons with the Cubs, appearing in 589 games. He was the Cubs' first-round pick and third player taken overall in the 1998 amateur draft.

Another Boiler lost for the season

Add Nate Minnoy to the already large list of Boilers that out for the season. Minnoy tore the MCL in his right knee against Northwestern. David Teague and Carl Landry are already sitting out the season due to knee injuries. Matt Kiefer is the only player who was projected to be in the starting lineup at the start of the year. Injuries to Landry, Minnoy and Teague, coupled with the suspension of junior guard Tarrance Crump, have forced Painter to go deep into his bench to start games. The starters aren't that good so you can image how bad his bench is.
