Someone stop the madness

Borrowed without permission from the Purdue Exponent.

Purdue freshman guard Korey Spates has been released from the men's basketball team for conduct detrimental to the team.

This is the second time Spates has been reprimanded by the team. Spates was suspended in November for the same offense; that suspension lasted six days.

Coach Matt Painter said Spates' dismissal was the best decision for both parties.

"We felt that it would be in the best interests of Korey and our team to part company," Painter said in a statement. "I wish nothing but the best for him and his family."

Spates did not practice on Monday, and his release was not the result of one single action but rather a decision based upon a culmination of actions, according to Elliot Bloom, the associate sports information director.

Spates, who had been barred from talking to the media for most of the season, averaged 10.1 points in 15 games for Purdue.

The Boilers are now left with nine active players on their roster, following injuries and suspensions. After starting the season with 10 guards, Purdue is now left with five on its active roster.
