Championship dream squashed

UPDATE: Dave made fun of me because he didn't believe "without a whimper" made any sense. He thought I should have typed "with a whimper". Well Dave, maybe you should call up the Washington Post because they used "without a whimper" in one of their articles. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

The church team went without a whimper tonight scoring only two runs the whole game. I was 1-for-3 with an error that gave up two unearned runs. However, after only winning four games during the regular season, a second place finish is nothing to sneeze at.

Championship, here we come

First Brethren kept their improbable postseason going by winning two more games tonight. In the second game, we had a seven run lead going into the bottom of the 7th and ended up letting the other team score the seven runs they needed to tie the game up. I singled home the go ahead run in the top of the 8th and later scored an insurance run. We ended up winning by two runs.

Everyone hit the ball well all night, including Erv who drilled a double off the left field fence in the first game. Of course since this is my blog, I would like to let everyone know that I had 7 RBIs in the second game. I had a 3-run homer, a 3-run double, and the eventual game winning single in the top of the 8th. I like to add that it was Kenny who scored the winning run.

We play for the championship Monday at 6:00. The team we play hasn't lost in the tourney so we'll need to beat them two times in a row to win the championship.

So long Cesar

The Cubs dealt shortstop Cesar Izturis to the Pirates today for a player to be named later. Izturis came from the Dodgers for Greg Maddux last year, but hasn't played much due to Ryan Theriot's offensive prowess. I guess that means that the Cubs traded away Greg Maddux for a player to be named later from the Pirates.

It is being reported that Cesar was heard mumbling "Et tu, Jim Henrdy?" on his way out of Wrigley Field.

Another night, another win

The church team won yet again tonight, 8-4. We play Thursday at 6 and again at 7 if we win the first game.

The dream lives on

The church team won another elimination game tonight. We only won four games all year so two wins in the tourney is pretty impressive. The two tournament victories are even more impressive when you consider that two of our four regular season wins came by way of a forfeit.

We play tomorrow at 7:00.

Cubs pick up Jason Kendall from A's

The Cubs traded Rob Bowen and minor leaguer Jerry Blevins for Jason Kendall tonight. Kendall is hitting a paltry .226 at the moment, but Cubs GM Jim Hendry assures that Kendall is a much better second half hitter.

Let's hope Jim is right and Kendall impacts the Cubs like Kenny Lofton did in 2003 rather than like Phil Nevin did last season.

Lebowski Fest is next weekend!

Get your White Russians ready dudes, because the 6th Annual Lebowski Fest is next weekend in Louisville, KY. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you need to get your hands on The Big Lebowski and watch it. I have it on VHS and DVD if you need to borrow a copy.

If you're going, you'll want to pick up this t-shirt first.

Next Cubs owner = Mark Cuban?

ESPN is reporting that Mark Cuban submitted his application to buy the Cubs to MLB yesterday.

The report says that most people around baseball believe that there is no way MLB would allow Cuban to buy the Cubs because of his antics as owner of the Dallas Mavericks. His Wikipedia page says that he's been fined at least $1,665,000 for 13 incidents.

Here is Jay Marotti's take on Cuban's bid for ownership of the Cusb.

Do you believe in miracles?

The church softball team erupted for 17 runs tonight, extending the season for at least one more game. Everybody hit the ball well tonight obviously since we touched the plate 17 times (four by me alone).

Church Softball

We lost the first game of the double-elimination tourney tonight to a team that hadn't won a game all year. Of course, we've only won four and two of those were because the other team didn't show up. To make things even worse, the other team only had two outfielders for the first five innings. Unfortunately, since it is a double-elimination tourney, we have to play again on Thursday before this season mercifully comes to an end.

I'm taking the meters off too because I'm embarrassed by my craptastic power numbers. I did have two triples tonight though.
