Cubs win 7th in a row

The Cubs evened up their win-loss record at 39-39 today with a come from behind victory over the division leading Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5. Rich Hill spotted the Brewers five runs in the first inning and was yanked after the third inning. The Cubs bullpen held the Brew Crew scoreless the rest of the way and the Cubs offense kept chipping away at the lead. Newcomer Billy Petrick and Michael Wuertz each pitched two scoreless innings.

The Cubs were down 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth against Francisco Cordero, who was 27-for-29 in save situations this season. Soriano singled with one out and advanced to third on a Mike Fontenot single. Derrek Lee then hit a sac fly that plated Soriano. Aramis Ramirez then smacked the first pitch he saw into the left field bleachers for a game-winning two-run homer.

The Cubs haven't lost since Big Jim left on his cross-country tour last Friday and I've let him know that he can't return until they lose.

Carl Landry drafted by Sonics

Former Boilermaker star Carl Landry was drafted with the first pick of the second round in last night's NBA draft by the Sonics. The Sonics then quickly dealt Landry to the Houston Rockets for a future second-round pick and cash considerations.

When asked about going to the Rockets Landry said, "Houston really doesn't have a lot of depth at that position. I'm a power forward who can come in right away and fill a need, as well as have an immediate impact. They have scorers, so I'm going to do all the little things it takes to win ballgame."

Bears add former Boilermaker

The Bears picked up fullback and special teamer Jon Goldsberry yesterday. I can now say that I sat next to a current Chicago Bear in an OLS class at Purdue.

Ouch

LaRon Landry may be walking funny around minicamp for a couple days. It seems that Joe Gibbs decided to let the players leave practice early so that they could go out on some team building exercises. LaRon went with some defensive players to play paintball and was shot directly in the groin by a teammate. No word on who the Deadeye Dick was that struck LaRon.

Brokeback Wrigley

Sounds like Zambrano and Barrett are "good buddies" again. Zambrano told reporters, "He [Barrett] came to me the next day, and he apologized and I apologized to him and we cried. I still love him."

"It was over the moment it happened for me. There were no hard feelings," Barrett told reporters. "I totally understand how things like that can happen. And like I said, I love him enough to move forward." Barrett added, "Carlos is my soul mate. We can never be separated. They don't call him 'Big Z' for nothing." Alright, Barrett didn't actually say those last three sentences, but I know he was thinking them.

Do you think Big Z always makes Barrett catch? That doesn't seem fair to Michael.

Cubs select 3rd baseman with third overall pick

The Cubs took high school third baseman, Josh Vitters, with the third overall pick in today's draft. According to Baseball America Josh is the top pure high school hitter in America. I think I remember Baseball America calling Mark Prior the best pitcher in America when the Cubs drafted him with the second overall pick in 2001.

Zambrano and Barrett decide to slap fight

Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett got into a fight in the dugout during the 5th inning of yesterday's game. Zambrano wasn't happy with Barrett's passed ball and subsequent errant throw that allowed a run. Of course I'm sure Big Z wouldn't have been so upset by Barrett's miscues had he not allowed six earned runs and a career high 13 hits in just five innings of work. To make matters worse, Barrett went into the clubhouse after Z and ended up getting a busted lip thanks to the burly right-hander. The cut on Barrett's lip was bad enough that he ended up in the hospital to get it taken care of.

My favorite part is when Barrett points up to the scoreboard as if to say "I'm not the one who gave up the 13 hits and 7 runs". Barrett has been making tons of mental mistakes lately so if one of the two combatants need to go, I hope it is Barrett. Even though Big Z hasn't been performing as well as usual, he's still much more valuable than Barrett.
